On reading spectacles
The anxiety is enormous. It grew both deeper and wider. Regarding this collapse (not merely nervous, for that matter), an interesting point is that some small changes in everyday life turned out, at the time, to be unexpectedly vital, transcending the everyday itself: my new phone, the television, and quite a few things connected with those two objects.
Today the plan is simple: shave, shower, and have my eyesight checked. My lenses have slight scratches. I didn’t know, until long after I started wearing them, how they were supposed to be cleaned. For instance, I had no idea how damaging ordinary paper tissue can be. It may even be worth replacing these lenses if my myopia and astigmatism haven’t increased significantly.
And perhaps an additional pair for presbyopia (reading glasses, glasses for using my phone, glasses for writing) could have an impact comparable to that of the phone and the television at the time.
To my surprise, I discovered that reading a book or my phone at fourteen centimetres isn’t harmful. Yet the optimal reading distance is precisely the one between that very short distance without glasses and the long distance with them. Reading glasses could restore that distance, ideal for several reasons.
